WWII Luftwaffe MemorabiliaThe Luftwaffe was the German air force. The Imperial German Army Air Service (Luftstreitkräfte), founded in 1910, was the forerunner of the Luftwaffe. The Treaty of Versailles, which ended WWI, prohibited Germany from having an air force, and German pilots were trained in secret until 1935, when Adolf Hitler formally established the Luftwaffe, breaking the Treaty's ban on German military aviation.
At the outset of World War II, the Luftwaffe was one of the most modern, powerful, and experienced air forces in the world, dominating the skies over Europe with aircraft much more advanced than their counterparts.
